Unit [Canister] cracked less than a year of use

I purchased this product at Home Depot on August 30, 2025. Yesterday, August 2, 2026, I discovered a water leak coming from the housing. During inspection, there was a crack in the housing. I purchased another unit to replace the cracked canister. This unit failed prematurely after less than 1 year of use.

Great filter. But you NEED to make it very clear in the instructions that there is a check valve inside this unit. There is a mention of an expansion tank in the materials list but that's is. My HW tank relief started to blow off after installing this. Couple days later the tank blew out and had to be replaced. Granted it was obviously close to the end of life.
TO ANYONE BUYING THIS UNIT: YOU MUST INSTALL A DOMESTIC WATER EXPANSION TANK ON THE COLD LINE BETWEEN THE FILTER AND HOT WATER TANK.(if your house does not already have one).

I bought this filter a couple of years ago (professionally installed). I have changed the filter many times. However, last May 2024, the clear tumbler started leaking. Then, this week. it also started leaking. Both times, the clear casing was cracked right around the place where the O Ring sat. The first time I thought that it might have been tightened too much. This last time, it was hand tightened and still cracked. It also costs around $60 just to buy this piece when a full new unit is not too much more than that. I also noticed that the by-pass handle turns off ALL of my water to the house even when it is only supposed to by-pass the filter. At this point, since I bought a whole new unit, we are replacing it. If the tumbler cracks again, I am going to a different brand. I just do not get why the plastic tumbler has cracked two times int he past year. What gives GE?

Unit works good as far as filtering water, it's the pressure release valve that is a poor design. When i went to change filter the red cap and spring flew in all dirctions, i could not replace the cap as it wouldn't stay in. I won't buy another as the same thing would happen again.

Many customers commented on the sump thread failures over time. I have purchased and install more than 12 of these units over the years. It is my experience the sump threads will fail, over time. The frequency seemed to be dependent on the chlorine levels in the water. Chlorine will penetrate plastic and cause it to become brittle.
The most disappointing thing is GE charges more for the replacement sump than an entire unit. The part number is WS30X10015. Every-time I had to replace a sump, I bought and entire unit, because it was cheaper. The is just plain wrong. GE is gouging the customer for replacement parts.

I have well water in upstate NY. I have used this for yrs and buy off brand 5 micron filters. They run about $100 for 16. I drink my water and it usually goes through this filter and a fridge filter as well. This unit with the filters I use seem to work as the filters start off pure white and end up dark brown by the time they are changed. I do want to know if the rubber ring the actual filters sit on that sits inside the clear base is required. It is starting to split and if I do need that rubber ring to sit the filters on, where do I buy it?

The housing that the filter actually resides in has developed cracks in the threads. Need the threads to securely attach the housing to the base, all I want to know is do I need to buy a complete unit or can I buy just the clear plastic housing?

Install was easy once I figured out how I wanted to do it. Does not come with a filter cartridge, so you can choose which style you want. Instantly tasted the difference in the water, which was kind of sad for me, as I really liked the taste before, but hopefully this will help extend the lifespan of our appliances along with the water softener I installed at the same time.

This is our third issue with the canister threads deteriorating. Threads develop cracks and literally fall off the canister. Customer service tried to say I was screwing the canister on in the wrong direction. I've been in automotive industry for over 50 years. I know how to install and remove items with threads. Definitely material and design defect. Recommend not buying this product.

Bought along with a new water softener, figured it was worth the investment to help protect the softener. Fairly easy to install, i would have preferred to invert the mounting bracket so that it does not show but due to the design the bracket mounting screws would hit the filter housing.
One issue with the install, had extremely minor leaks on both fittings when installed. Followed directions exactly and had to further tighten the fittings. tightening the fittings into the plastic housing is a little unnerving, leaks appear to have stopped but will be keeping an eye on it for awhile.

the initial investment of installing these filters in an older home with old pipes, will def pay off. No longer replacing shower heads, faucet heads, no smell or streaks in dishwasher, and better performance in my laundry washer.

I had the GE GXWH40L whole filter installed one six months ago am very satisfied. I am using 5 micron filters that I replace every 90 days. My Municipal water supply is very hard and includes iron and calcium. The water is treated and potable but I don't trust it. It requires softening and the iron content is high. The filter is installed before the softener. Since adding the whole house filter, iron and calcium buildup at faucets and toilets has been greatly reduced and iron ring build up in the toilets is minimal. I had the whole house filter installed after remodeling three bathrooms and pleased with the results. All bathroom fixtures are new and wearing well.

The carbon filter is difficult to change - the seal/ring doesn't sit well in the canister causing messy leaks when trying to install a new filter. Filter leaves carbon residue in toilets. I confirmed the source by wiping carbon particles out of the filter housing itself. Since I change the filters more frequently than recommended, I would have expected the filters to stay tight.

This is a good whole home water filter, we are seasonal and have changed the pleated filter 4 times. The o-ring has now stretched beyond it's ability to stay in the housing groove and am having issues locating a replacement locally.
Suggest buying 2-3 o-rings to keep as replacements when buying this unit.

Had my set up for about 15 months. Upon changing the filter the plastic threads on the filter housing all cracked off. The Retail store where purchased will not except for return because item was used and over 1 year old. Having a lot of difficulty finding a replacement housing. Very disappoint in the quality. Would not recomend to anyone.

Same complaint as others. DON'T BUY THIS. After 1 year, the clear canister developed a crack. We didn't now it until my first floor bathroom had water pooling on the floor. We thought it was strange but cleaned it up. The third time it happened, I looked up at our ceiling and noticed the water dripping. The water had been leaking from the canister for at least two months to be able to make it from our attic, insulation, second floor, down onto our first floor. Everything is soaking wet.

I have the model GXWH40L with the clear filter cup. I purchased a second unit because my first one developed a leak in the clear filter cup base. The second clear filter cup is now cracked in the same place at the base. Apparently, others are having the same problem. You are selling the replacement clear filter cup for $56 while a brand new until sells for $13.95 more? Is this an error? At this rate you should sell the cup at a discounted bulk rate price since these clear cups are defective in design and in material content. I now have water damage on the shelf beneath the filter.

Where do I start. Terrible customer service !!! I like others here had a problem the product GXWH40L. The clear bowl had developed a leak at the base where it appears most of them have this problem. The unit is mounted in a closet where my main water valve is so it it not exposed to the weather. The water was leaking at a fine mist and was hitting against the wall where it ran down and under my wood floor. So several planks of the hard wood are warped. When I called GE I got nothing but a run around. Just rear the reviews on this product it is a DEFECT !!!! I am in the customer service business 43 years Autmotive. I always take care of my customers regardless of warranty. All I got was a run around and a company that can care less about you as a customer !!!!!

Installed 2 units in different places in my home water system cold lines. Looked like a nice product. The clear plastic canister bowl looks heavy duty and rugged. My water pressure is regulated to 60 PSI. However, after a few years, the bowl of one unit cracked near the bottom corner, spewing water and flooding my mechanical room!!! Inspecting the second unit, found visually a crack in the exact same place though it was not yet leaking!!! Googling, I found another person's review from 2014 titled "Bowl cracks after one year or so". Also noted that some major retailers no longer stock the product. I'd rather not have to re-plumb to install another brand of units, but I sure don't want flooding every few years!!! Anyone know if GE has identified and corrected what appears to be a manufacturing process flaw?

I bought this item for my house when I added on a water softener as a prefilter to extend the life of my softener and to get better overall water in our home. It seems however that about once a year I have to replace the filter housing. It cracks in the same place every time and appears to be a manufacturer defect. You can buy the entire assembly cheaper on Amazon then you can buy the part. I live in west central Florida so this isnt due to freezes and I have monitored my local water pressure from the city and it is well within the limits of the unit. I am at the point of switching out to a different unit unless G.E. figures this out and fixes the defect with the part.

Have lived in this home for 29 years. Put in the whole house filter about a year ago and watched the filter become chocolate color around 3 months. Changed the filter, great. Started to wonder why I was getting "Water Hammer" on cold faucets constantly. Called the plumber and he wanted to put in a pressure regulator for $350. I passed. Pressure is 90psi. High I know. But it has always been. I'm online buying new filters for my unit and notice 3 others mention water hammer.Then they mention the bypass position stops the hammer! Swell. Bypass, no hammer. Filter, double hammer. Well what to do? Not going to buy the GXWH35L as was suggested.

I have had my system now for 4-5 years and haven't had a single issue with it. It was easy to install and it's very easy to use. Buy the clear one so you can see how dirty the filter gets. Otherwise it's pretty much a guessing game on when the filter needs changing. Filter is often quite dirty before there is a significant drop in water pressure.
