For the second time the plastic from the ice auger has broken apart and ended up in my drink. Because that auger is clear like the ice I didn't see it while drinking my iced beverage. Serious hazard. Replaced the first auger and now the replacement auger has the same defect and has broken into pieces that the ice maker dispenser does dispense with the ice. Good refrigerator except for this flawed auger. So can't recommend this model with ice dispenser plastic auger. Have photos of issue.

My recent new home purchase came with this poorly engineered, defective and dangerous auger part in the freezer's ice maker. Thankfully (?) it was already broken and buried under a full tray of very old ice so I missed the opportunity to choke to death on shards of broken plastic. After reading through most of these reviews, I'm amazed GE is apparently still selling this part. It seems as though it was designed to generate class action lawsuits.

This ice maker is crap! The auger now broke for the third time. I am not sure why they use such a cheap piece of plastic in a freezing environment. It is destined to break very fast. We have now the third time to replace either the whole ice maker unit, or have someone come and replace the auger. Either way, I can not recommend this product.

I have had to replace many parts on this refg. Don™™t want to buy a new one yet, so for the 3rd time I will try to replace the auger. Always had someone do it for me, this time I will need to do it. Hope I can, will look for a video. Had a repair person tell me that the parts in this refg are plastic and cheap. i do believe that, too bad the purchase price wasn™™t cheap.

Plastic material is not spec'd for freezer application - obviously. Too brittle and can't handle the load when the ice bucket is "full" and not even frozen. Finding broken pieces in your drinking glass is far from passing "safety certification" - and yes, I'm a Mechanical Engineer and would love for the Engineers at Appliance Park in Louisville, KY show us their DFMEA and how they got this design approved for production. Another Jack Welch cost cutting measure mandated and implemented with many dissatisfied customers - again. Stop selling extended warranties and start making quality products again!

The acrylic plastic that the auger blades are made of break off in pieces that could be easily mistaken for broken ice. Seems like a design error that GE should have corrected by now. (The on-off switch for the icemaker is also located in an inconvenient place - behind the ice bucket itself. The entire bucket has to be removed to turn the icemaker off and on.)

My suspicions about this part seem to be correct reading the other reviews. This plastic piece is broken and rather than buy it repeatedly like other customers, I think I'll just keep reaching into the ice bucket despite cold hands. GE I would think you would take this feedback and redesign a replacement part of different, stronger materials. Seems like a waste of $35

This part is made of substandard plastic that breaks easily. When it breaks, ice will no longer be moved down to be dispensed through the ice dispenser in the freezer door. Maybe this is out of stock because so many people are having to replace it?

Our ice maker builds a glacier in about one day.
Even though we use the ice, it just keeps cramming in more ice until it's a big frozen block.
If we try to use the ice dispenser and the ice is too stiff, the auger breaks.
Also, the auger is 'temporarily out of stock'.
Also, also, you can't back order the auger.
Poor ice maker design, even worse execution.
We're basically waiting for this to die, need an excuse to get a non=GE appliance.
Oh wait, school just started back? Sounds like a good excuse to me.

Frig about 10 years old, purchased new. Frig has been a trouble free product. Ice maker on the other hand will keep me from purchasing another GE and Frig. This will be the forth (4), auger and crush cover to replace. The ice freeze plate also stopped working. Last GE frig for us!!!!!!!

We thought it a fluke, but now it has broken a second time in 3 years or less and some plastic is missing (a big chunk came out, but like a puzzle, it doesn't fit exactly where the piece came from)---that can only mean we have ingested it! I've had this refrigerator for 7 years... the water line which runs thru the freezer door freezes up and it's now needing its second ice maker... Refrigerator is nice size and has adequate features, but the design is less than adequate... I have had GE Appliances for 35 years... My last refrigerator was purchase in 1972 and lasted until 2007 NEVER needing service!!! HOWEVER, the last two GE appliances that I've purchased (this refrigerator and a GE Washer)... the two items you use the most are terrible... I'm done with GE...
